Social Media: Three Tips for Start-Ups

The stats are clear that most start-ups fail, so it’s crucial new brands get their digital marketing strategy right. Of course, social media is a critical component in all of that. Therefore, this article focuses on social media tips for start-ups.

1. Start with one or two platforms.

As a new brand, it’s tempting to register on every social media platform imaginable. However, this isn’t necessarily the smartest strategy. It’s important to realize that every platform is different and requires a unique approach to content.

Consider which platforms work best for your business and the type of content you want to produce. Start with one or two platforms and only expand if you see results and time allows. In general, it’s incredibly difficult to manage more than three platforms and do them justice.

2. Don’t oversell on social media

Many new brands see social media purely as an additional sales or marketing channel. It’s certainly true to an extent that social media is a form of marketing. However, it’s firstly a way of connecting and communicating with current and future customers.

Brands that treat their social media as purely a place to advertise their products and services don’t perform well. Users want useful content to read and share. Users may buy your products, but purchases are not their main reason for using social media. Therefore, you should spend most of your time producing quality content and only some of the time promoting your products and services.

3. Schedule your content

Getting a new business off the ground takes a lot of work. Your work on social media will be crucial to those efforts, but you don’t want it to take up too much of your time. Therefore, it’s critical to have a coherent plan for your social media content. Create a plan to post the content. Using a service such as Hootsuite is the perfect solution here. You can schedule your content to post a week or even a month in advance.

As a start-up owner, you know the odds are against you before you even start. It is important to get your digital marketing strategy right; social media usage is crucial. Remember to start with one or two platforms, don’t oversell and schedule your content.
